You will find both good and bad practitioners in any environment and the Internet is no exception. As a business owner you will most likely be aware of this and want to find a good SEO practitioner to help you increase the visibility of your website with the search engines. The Internet marketing sphere is a microcosm of the rest of the world and you will find the full spectrum of personality types in this occupation. One way to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to say, is to treat your first meeting with a potential SEO practitioner like a job interview. The reputation of your business is at stake here so you do not want to take on a SEO practitioner who does not have your best interests at heart.

Research has shown that first impressions are formed in the first thirty seconds of meeting someone and are largely based on visual clues, so when you meet a practitioner for the first time, you would do well to literally 'look them over'. Don't be obvious when you do this but do it nevertheless as it will give you a good idea of what a person is like from the purely visual clues that you are seeing. If the person you are seeing has arrived late for your meeting and is now sitting with their legs spread across from you, chewing gum and exhibiting a bad case of bed head, then it is highly unlikely that they will do a very good job for you. Their lack of professionalism and respect toward you indicates that they will probably approach their work the same way. It may seem superficial to judge people by their appearance but this technique goes back to prehistoric times when survival was based upon the accurate visual interpretation of a situation. Now, we are not talking about people who have untamable hair but about people who indicate to you, by way of their slovenly appearance and lack of manners that they are unprofessional.

But appearance, like words, can be deceiving. People who know about the power of the first impression can use it to their advantage to present you with an appealing package. They will most likely also be smooth talkers so you will have to use other methods to find out if they able to genuinely put their money where their mouth is with their SEO. Listen to how they speak as much as what they say. Do they use lots of big words yet fail to provide satisfactory explanations and answers to your questions? This indicates that they have the sales pitch down pat but do not have the knowledge to back it up. Do they speak fast or in a patronizing tone and make elaborate gestures that distract you from what they are saying? People like this might be trying to get you to sign on with them and aren't necessarily concerned with delivering on their promises.

The abovementioned examples are only a few of the many ways in which you can judge a person by their appearance. You should, however, be careful not to misinterpret the impressions you are getting as a person who crosses their arms may not have a bad attitude, they may simply be cold.
